Schutzschalter

Schutzschalter is a German term that translates to "protective switch" in English. It is a general term encompassing various types of electrical safety devices designed to protect electrical circuits from damage caused by overcurrents or short circuits. The primary function of a Schutzschalter is to interrupt the flow of electricity when a fault occurs, thereby preventing overheating, fire, and damage to appliances.

Common types of Schutzschalter include miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) and residual current devices (RCDs), also known as fault current interrupters (FCIs). MCBs are designed to detect overcurrents, which can be caused by overloading or short circuits. When an overcurrent is detected, a bimetallic strip or an electromagnet within the MCB trips a mechanism, opening the circuit. RCDs, on the other hand, detect imbalances in the current flowing into and out of a circuit. If there is a difference, it indicates that current is leaking to ground, often through a person, and the RCD quickly disconnects the power.
