The first phase is the boundary lubrication phase, which occurs at the start of the lubrication process. In this phase, the lubricant film is thin, and the load is primarily supported by direct metal-to-metal contact. As the system continues to operate, the lubricant film thickens, and the system enters the mixed lubrication phase. In this phase, both hydrodynamic and boundary lubrication effects are present. The lubricant film is thick enough to partially support the load, but direct metal-to-metal contact still occurs in some areas. This phase is characterized by a reduction in friction and wear compared to the boundary lubrication phase.

The final phase is the hydrodynamic lubrication phase, where the lubricant film is thick enough to fully separate the moving surfaces. In this phase, the load is entirely supported by the lubricant film, and friction and wear are minimized. This phase is the desired operating condition for most lubricated systems, as it ensures smooth operation and extends the life of the machinery.

The transition between these phases is influenced by various factors, including the type of lubricant, the operating conditions, and the design of the lubricated system.
