Schaltungsverstärker, a German term, translates to "circuit amplifier" or "switching amplifier" in English. It refers to a type of electronic amplifier that utilizes switching techniques to amplify a signal. Unlike linear amplifiers, which amplify the input signal by varying their output current proportionally, Schaltungsverstärker operate by rapidly switching the output transistors on and off. This switching action creates a high-frequency pulse train whose average value represents the amplified signal.

The core principle behind Schaltungsverstärker is the efficient conversion of power. By switching transistors between their fully on and fully off states, power dissipation within the amplifier is minimized. This results in significantly higher efficiency compared to linear amplifiers, making Schaltungsverstärker particularly well-suited for applications where power consumption is a critical factor, such as in battery-powered devices or high-power audio systems.
