Savar

Savar is an upazila (sub-district) of Dhaka District in the Dhaka Division of Bangladesh. It lies to the northwest of Dhaka city and is bordered by several upazilas and districts, including Gazipur. The upazila includes Savar Municipality and numerous rural unions, reflecting a mix of suburban communities, villages, and small towns. Administratively, Savar Upazila is divided into union councils as part of the local government system.

The economy of Savar features a blend of agriculture and industry. In recent decades it has become an important site for garment manufacturing and other light industry, with factories concentrated in and around the Savar and nearby Ashulia areas. The upazila is served by major road networks that connect Dhaka with northern areas, facilitating commuter and freight traffic.

A notable event in Savar’s recent history is the Rana Plaza building collapse on 24 April 2013, a disaster that killed more than 1,100 people and drew international attention to safety and labor practices in the ready-made garment sector. Since then, the area has continued to develop infrastructural projects, housing, and services in response to urban growth.

The population of Savar is predominantly Bengali-speaking, with a Muslim majority and smaller Hindu and other communities. The area contains mosques, temples, educational institutions, and markets that serve its residents. Savar remains a key peri-urban region near Dhaka, balancing industrial growth with rural land use.
