Satelliidivõrkude refer to communication networks that utilize artificial satellites orbiting the Earth to relay signals. These networks play a crucial role in providing telecommunications services, including internet access, telephone, and television broadcasting, to remote or underserved areas where terrestrial infrastructure is limited or non-existent.

The fundamental principle of a satellite network involves a ground station transmitting a signal to a satellite, which then amplifies and re-transmits the signal back to another ground station or directly to user terminals. Satellites can be positioned in various orbits, such as geostationary (GEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO), or low Earth orbit (LEO), each offering different advantages in terms of latency, coverage, and cost. GEO satellites, for instance, remain in a fixed position relative to a point on Earth, providing continuous coverage but with higher latency. LEO satellites orbit closer to Earth, resulting in lower latency but requiring a constellation of many satellites for continuous global coverage.

Applications of satellite networks are diverse, ranging from global internet connectivity and mobile communications to emergency services, scientific research, and military operations. They are indispensable for connecting ships at sea, aircraft in flight, and remote communities. The development of satellite network technology continues to advance, with ongoing efforts to improve bandwidth, reduce latency, and increase the overall efficiency and accessibility of satellite-based communication.
