Sarjakuva

Sarjakuva is the Finnish term for comics, referring to the art form that uses sequential images—often with captions and dialogue—to tell stories or convey information. The range includes newspaper comic strips, graphic novels, and webcomics, and the term covers both short, humorous pieces and longer, narrative works.

In Finnish usage, sarjakuva encompasses multiple formats, including sarjakuvakirja (a self-contained book) and sarjakuvalehti (a magazine or periodical with comics). The medium is viewed as a form of visual storytelling produced for children, young adults, and adults alike.

Historically, comics reached Finland through imported translations and international publications in the early 20th century. Domestic creators emerged in the mid-20th century, and from the 1960s onward the field expanded to include humor strips, adventure, science fiction, and autobiographical or experimental works. The rise of the internet brought webcomics and digital distribution in the 2000s and 2010s.

Today sarjakuva remains a significant part of Finnish culture and publishing. It serves as entertainment as well as a vehicle for satire, reportage, and personal expression. Finnish artists participate in national and international comic scenes, with works appearing in magazines, books, and online platforms.
