In addition to calcium dynamics, the sarcoplasm hosts enzymes involved in glycolysis and other metabolic pathways that support immediate and sustained energy supply during activity. The composition and properties of the sarcoplasm can influence muscle fiber type characteristics, fatigue resistance, and response to stimuli.

Clinically, disruptions in sarcoplasmic calcium handling or sarcoplasmic composition can contribute to muscular diseases or disorders of calcium homeostasis, such as certain myopathies or malignant hyperthermia susceptibility. Understanding sarcoplasmatic aspects aids in describing how muscle fibers meet functional demands.
