Sappenvirtaus, also known as bile flow, refers to the movement of bile from the liver and gallbladder through the biliary tree into the small intestine. Bile is a digestive fluid produced by the liver that aids in the digestion and absorption of fats. It is stored and concentrated in the gallbladder between meals.

The process begins with the liver producing bile. This bile then travels through a network of small bile ducts within the liver. These ducts merge to form larger hepatic ducts. The gallbladder is a small organ attached to the liver that stores and releases bile. When fatty food enters the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine, the gallbladder contracts, releasing stored bile into the common bile duct. This duct then joins the pancreatic duct before emptying into the duodenum at a structure called the sphincter of Oddi.

Disruptions to sappenvirtaus can lead to various medical conditions. Blockages in the bile ducts, caused by gallstones or tumors, can impede bile flow, leading to jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) and other symptoms. Impaired bile flow can also affect the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Conditions affecting the liver, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis, can also impact bile production and flow.
