It is a right tributary of the Elbe River, which it joins near the city of Dresden. The river has a length of approximately 412 kilometers and drains a basin area of about 25,000 square kilometers. Its source is located in the Ore Mountains, near the town of Altenberg in Saxony, Germany. The Saale is an important waterway for transportation and has been historically significant for trade and commerce.
