Sagaing

Sagaing is a city in central Myanmar. It is the administrative capital of Sagaing Region and is located on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River, opposite Mandalay. The city is a regional trading center and a gateway to the Upper Myanmar plains.

Sagaing is renowned as a major Buddhist religious site. The Sagaing Hills, just north of the city, host hundreds of monasteries and pagodas, and the area has long been a center for Buddhist study and pilgrimage. Monastic education and religious scholarship attract visitors from across the country.

The urban area serves as a local administrative and cultural hub with markets, schools, and healthcare facilities. It is connected by road and rail to Mandalay and other towns along the Irrawaddy, and river traffic on the Irrawaddy remains important for commerce.
