The STFT is a signal processing technique used to determine the sinusoidal frequency and phase content of a signal as it changes over time. Unlike the standard Fourier Transform, which analyzes the entire signal at once, the STFT breaks the signal into smaller, overlapping segments and applies the Fourier Transform to each segment. This process results in a time-frequency representation of the signal, showing how the spectral content evolves over time.

Applications of STFTgebaseerde methods are widespread. In audio processing, they are used for spectral analysis, sound synthesis, and noise reduction. In speech recognition, STFTgebaseerde features like Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) are crucial for identifying spoken words. In biomedical signal processing, STFTgebaseerde analysis can be employed to study the time-varying frequency content of signals like electroencephalograms (EEGs) or electrocardiograms (ECGs).

The output of an STFT is often visualized as a spectrogram, which plots time on one axis, frequency on another, and the magnitude or intensity of the frequency component at a given time and frequency as color or brightness. The choice of window function and overlap between segments are important parameters that influence the time and frequency resolution of the STFT. Higher frequency resolution comes at the cost of poorer time resolution, and vice-versa, a phenomenon known as the Heisenberg-Gabor limit. Therefore, STFTgebaseerde approaches often involve a trade-off in resolution depending on the specific application's needs.
