SOLAS stands for the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea. It is one of the most important international treaties concerning the safety of merchant ships. The convention aims to specify standards on building, equipping, and operating merchant ships that comply with these safety standards. The first version of SOLAS was adopted in 1914 in response to the sinking of the Titanic. Since then, it has been updated several times, with the current version being SOLAS 1974.

The SOLAS Convention is maintained by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations. The convention is divided into chapters, each covering a specific aspect of maritime safety. These chapters address topics such as ship construction, fire protection, life-saving appliances, radio communications, and the carriage of dangerous goods. Amendments to SOLAS are adopted by the IMO's Maritime Safety Committee.

SOLAS applies to all ships engaged in international voyages, with some exceptions for certain types of vessels like warships or ships not propelled by mechanical means. Compliance with SOLAS is mandatory for signatory states, and ships are subject to inspection by port state control officers. The convention is a cornerstone of international maritime safety regulations, contributing significantly to reducing maritime casualties and protecting lives at sea. Its continuous evolution reflects the changing nature of shipping and the ongoing commitment to enhancing safety standards.
