SOFCkennojen

SOFCkennojen refers to solid oxide fuel cell stacks. A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is an electrochemical conversion device that generates electricity directly from a wide range of fuels, such as natural gas, biogas, and even coal gas. The "kennojen" part of the term is a Finnish pluralization, meaning "cells" or "stacks." Therefore, SOFCkennojen specifically denotes the collection or assembly of multiple SOFC cells working together to form a functional unit capable of producing a significant amount of electrical power.

These stacks are characterized by their high operating temperatures, typically between 600°C and 1000°C. This high temperature is necessary for the solid oxide electrolyte, usually a ceramic material like yttria-stabilized zirconia, to conduct ions effectively. The high operating temperature also allows for internal reforming of hydrocarbon fuels, meaning the fuel can be converted into hydrogen and carbon monoxide within the fuel cell itself, simplifying the overall system. SOFCkennojen are known for their high electrical efficiency and their ability to utilize a variety of fuels, making them a promising technology for stationary power generation, including combined heat and power (CHP) systems, and as auxiliary power units (APUs). The modular nature of SOFC stacks allows for scalability, enabling systems to be built for various power output requirements.
