SNFG

SNFG is a decimal-based unit of measurement, specifically a numeral system for encoding handwritten notes, intended primarily for the digital image translation of handwritten notes. It was developed by researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in the 2010s.

The acronym SNFG stands for "Stroke Number and Feature Groups." It is designed to convert handwritten characters into a numerical code that can be stored, transmitted, and processed digitally. SNFG representations of written characters consist of a series of strokes, defined as sequence of connected points in the 2D space, combined with information about the relative orientation of these strokes. Features such as stroke ordering, direction, and duration are taken into account.

SNFG is particularly useful in digital image processing applications such as handwritten text recognition (HTR), the conversion of handwritten documents into machine-readable digital text. It helps make HTR systems more accurate and robust, allowing them to handle a wide range of handwritten styles, languages, and writing instruments. SNFG can be used to recognize handwriting in various formats, including ink-only and pen-stylus based scans.

SNFG is a component of prior numeral systems, which turned handwritten digits and letters into digital representations, and built upon those concepts. Researchers at KAIST have proposed SNFG as part of their lacurasn-digit numeral system, which claims to outperform other numeral systems in detecting and interpreting handwritten characters.
