This interconnectivity allows subscribers of different mobile carriers to communicate with each other using text messages. The process involves the mobile switching center (MSC) of one network interacting with the MSC of another network through signaling protocols. When a user sends an SMS to a number on a different network, the originating MSC forwards the message to an SMSC (Short Message Service Center) which then routes it to the destination MSC. The destination MSC then delivers the message to the intended recipient's mobile device. This routing and delivery mechanism is standardized to ensure interoperability between various mobile networks, both domestically and internationally.

The establishment and maintenance of SMS interconnection agreements between network operators are crucial for seamless communication. These agreements often involve commercial terms related to message termination fees. The evolution of mobile technology has seen SMS remain a fundamental communication service, and its ability to traverse different networks is a testament to the standardized architecture of global mobile telecommunications. This interoperability is a core feature enabling the widespread use of SMS as a reliable communication channel.
