SIstærðkerfinu

SIstærðkerfinu is the Icelandic term for the International System of Units, commonly known as the SI. This is the modern form of the metric system and the world's most widely used system of measurement. It is the standard system for scientific, technological, industrial, and commercial purposes worldwide.

The SI is built upon seven base units: the meter (m) for length, the kilogram (kg) for mass, the second (s) for time, the ampere (A) for electric current, the kelvin (K) for thermodynamic temperature, the mole (mol) for amount of substance, and the candela (cd) for luminous intensity. All other SI units, known as derived units, are formed by combining these base units through mathematical relationships. Examples of derived units include the Newton (N) for force, the Joule (J) for energy, and the Watt (W) for power.

The system is designed to be coherent, meaning that units are derived from the base units without any numerical factors. Prefixes are also used to denote multiples and submultiples of the SI units, such as kilo- (10^3), centi- (10^-2), and milli- (10^-3). This standardization facilitates clear and consistent communication and measurement across different fields and countries. Iceland, like most nations, officially uses the SIstærðkerfinu for all measurements.
