SIRVs

SIRVs, short for Specialist Incident Response Vehicles, are a class of police support vehicles deployed by armed response and specialist units to approach and manage high-risk incidents. They are designed to enhance rapid mobility, provide protection, and carry equipment needed to assess threats and support frontline officers before entry teams arrive.

Most SIRVs are built on modified production chassis and feature reinforced armor, secure communications, and enhanced visibility for the crew. Interior layouts typically include a driver’s compartment, a tactical operator area, and space for equipment such as breaching tools, ballistic shields, medical kits, and communication gear. They are operated by trained personnel and work alongside other responders as part of a broader incident command structure.

Terminology and role vary by jurisdiction. In some forces, SIRVs are distinct from Armed Response Vehicles (ARVs) or other specialist vehicles; in others the terms are used interchangeably. The precise capabilities, equipment, and deployment rules of SIRVs are determined by local policy and legal frameworks.
