SERCA-mediated calcium handling refers to the process by which the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (SERCA) pumps calcium ions into the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum (SR/ER) in muscle and non-muscle cells, respectively. SERCA is a critical enzyme in the regulation of intracellular calcium concentrations, which are essential for various cellular functions, including muscle contraction, neurotransmission, and cell signaling.

SERCA pumps calcium ions against a concentration gradient, using ATP as an energy source.
