SERCA1SERCA3
SERCA1 and SERCA3 are two closely related members of the sarco/endoplasmic reticulum calcium-ATPase (SERCA) family. These proteins are integral membrane pumps found in the sarcoplasmic reticulum and endoplasmic reticulum, respectively, playing crucial roles in calcium ion homeostasis. SERCA1, also known as SERCA1a, is primarily expressed in fast-twitch skeletal muscle and is essential for muscle contraction and relaxation by actively transporting calcium ions from the cytoplasm back into the sarcoplasmic reticulum. SERCA3, on the other hand, is found in a wider variety of tissues, including smooth muscle, platelets, and various epithelial cells, where it contributes to maintaining intracellular calcium concentrations for diverse cellular processes.
Both SERCA1 and SERCA3 belong to the P-type ATPase superfamily, characterized by their ability to undergo phosphorylation
