Süsinikliitiumi

Süsinikliitiumi, also known as lithium carbide, is a chemical compound with the formula Li2C2. It is an ionic compound formed between lithium, a highly reactive alkali metal, and carbon, specifically in the form of the acetylide ion (C2^2-). This compound is a white crystalline solid.

Lithium carbide is typically synthesized by heating lithium metal in a stream of acetylene gas or by reacting lithium metal with graphite at high temperatures. It is a relatively stable compound under normal conditions but can react vigorously with water, producing lithium hydroxide and acetylene gas. This reaction highlights its hygroscopic nature and the reactivity of the acetylide ion.

The structure of süsinikliitiumi consists of lithium cations (Li+) and the diatomic acetylide anion (C2^2-). Each lithium ion is coordinated to the C2^2- unit. Due to the strong ionic bonding, süsinikliitiumi has a high melting point.

Süsinikliitiumi has found some niche applications, although it is not a widely used industrial chemical. Its primary use has been in research settings and as a precursor in the synthesis of other organolithium compounds or specialized carbon materials. Its ability to release acetylene upon reaction with water has also been noted.
