Sähkönsiirto refers to the process of transmitting electrical energy from power generation sources to consumers. This is a critical component of the electricity grid, enabling the widespread availability of electricity for homes, businesses, and industries. The transmission system typically operates at high voltages to minimize energy loss over long distances.

The journey of electricity begins at power plants, where it is generated through various means such as fossil fuels, nuclear power, hydropower, or renewable sources like wind and solar. From the power plant, the electricity is stepped up to very high voltages using transformers, often in the hundreds of kilovolts. This high voltage reduces the current flowing through the transmission lines, thereby minimizing resistive losses (I²R losses) that occur due to the inherent resistance of the conductors.

These high-voltage transmission lines are carried on large towers, forming an extensive network across regions and countries. Substations play a crucial role in the transmission system. At substations, voltages can be further adjusted, and the electricity can be switched to different lines or directed towards distribution networks.

The electricity then travels through the transmission grid to substations closer to areas of consumption. Here, the voltage is stepped down to lower levels suitable for local distribution. The distribution network then carries the electricity through smaller lines to individual consumers, where transformers further reduce the voltage to the standard levels used by appliances and equipment. This entire process ensures that electricity can be efficiently and reliably delivered to where it is needed.
