Rückströmungsschutz

Rückströmungsschutz, also known as backflow prevention, refers to a set of devices and methods employed to prevent the undesirable reversal of flow in a piping system. This reversal, termed backflow, can occur due to a difference in pressure between two connected systems, where the higher pressure pushes fluid from one system into another where it is not intended. Such contamination can be a significant hazard, particularly in potable water systems where non-potable substances could enter the clean water supply.

The primary purpose of Rückströmungsschutz is to safeguard public health and the integrity of industrial processes by ensuring that fluids only flow in their intended direction. Common causes of backflow include backsiphonage, where a negative pressure in the supply line draws water backward, and backpressure, where a higher pressure in a connected system forces water back into the supply.

Various devices are used to achieve Rückströmungsschutz. These range from simple vacuum breakers and check valves to more complex devices like reduced pressure zone (RPZ) backflow preventers and air gaps. The selection of an appropriate backflow prevention device depends on the specific application, the degree of hazard posed by potential backflow, and local regulations. Regular testing and maintenance of these devices are crucial to ensure their continued effectiveness. Failure to implement and maintain adequate Rückströmungsschutz can lead to serious health risks and operational disruptions.
