Röstmusklerna, often referred to as the vocal muscles, are a group of muscles located within the larynx, commonly known as the voice box. These muscles play a crucial role in producing sound for speech, singing, and other vocalizations. The primary muscles involved are the intrinsic muscles of the larynx, which are responsible for fine-tuning the tension and position of the vocal folds.

The most significant of these muscles include the cricothyroid muscle, which lengthens and tenses the vocal folds, leading to higher pitch. The thyroarytenoid muscles, also known as the vocalis muscles, shorten and relax the vocal folds, contributing to lower pitches and adding bulk to the vocal folds. The lateral cricoarytenoid and interarytenoid muscles work to adduct (bring together) the vocal folds, essential for phonation. The posterior cricoarytenoid muscles are unique in that they abduct (separate) the vocal folds, which is necessary for breathing.

When we speak or sing, the brain sends signals through the nerves to these muscles. The coordinated action of these muscles allows the vocal folds to vibrate as air passes through them from the lungs. The degree of tension, length, and approximation of the vocal folds determines the pitch, loudness, and quality of the sound produced. The proper functioning of the röstmusklerna is vital for clear and effective vocal communication. Any dysfunction or injury to these muscles can lead to voice disorders.
