The polymerization is typically initiated by species that can open the ring, such as cations, anions, or radicals, depending on the monomer and initiator used.

There are several mechanisms by which ring-opening polymerization can occur. Cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) is initiated by Lewis or Brønsted acids, which activate the monomer and lead to ring opening. Anionic ring-opening polymerization (AROP) uses strong nucleophiles to attack the monomer and initiate polymerization. Radical ring-opening polymerization (RROP) involves radical species that can abstract an atom from the cyclic monomer, leading to chain growth.
