Rundfunkbeiträge
Rundfunkbeiträge, often translated as broadcasting contributions or license fees, are mandatory payments in Germany to finance public service broadcasting. This fee is levied per household, regardless of whether the household actively uses public broadcasting services like ARD, ZDF, or Deutschlandradio. The fee system replaced the previous broadcasting license, which was based on the possession of specific devices like radios or televisions. The primary goal of Rundfunkbeiträge is to ensure the independence and diversity of public broadcasting by providing a stable and predictable funding source. The fee is collected by the Beitragsservice von ARD, ZDF und Deutschlandradio. Exemptions or reductions are possible for individuals receiving certain social benefits. The amount of the Rundfunkbeitrag is set by state treaty and can be adjusted periodically. This system aims to guarantee access to information, culture, and entertainment for all citizens, free from commercial or political influence.
