This expansion exerts upward pressure on the ground surface, causing it to lift or "heave." The extent of frost heave depends on several factors, including the amount of water present in the soil, the type of soil (fine-grained soils like silt and clay are more susceptible), and the depth of freezing.

The effects of frost heave can be significant, leading to damage to structures such as roads, bridges, buildings, and pipelines. Pavement can crack and buckle, foundations can shift, and underground utilities can be displaced or broken. This phenomenon is a major concern for civil engineers and construction professionals in regions experiencing freezing temperatures.
