Rotraatorites

Rotraatorites are a group of extinct, marine reptiles that lived during the Late Triassic period, approximately 228 to 201 million years ago. They are known from fossil remains found in Europe, particularly in Germany, and are characterized by their unique body structure and feeding habits. Rotraatorites are believed to have been semi-aquatic, with a streamlined body and paddle-like limbs, which they used to swim and catch prey.

The name "rotraatorites" comes from the Latin words "rotundus," meaning round, and "rotator," meaning to turn, referring to the circular, rotating motion of their jaws as they fed. Their jaws were equipped with sharp, serrated teeth that they used to crush and grind the shells of their prey, which were likely small, shelled marine organisms.

Rotraatorites are considered to be one of the earliest known examples of a group of reptiles known as ichthyosaurs, which are fully aquatic reptiles that evolved from their terrestrial ancestors. However, unlike ichthyosaurs, rotraatorites retained some terrestrial features, such as a four-legged body plan and a long, bony tail.

The study of rotraatorites provides valuable insights into the evolution of marine reptiles and the transition from land to sea. Their unique feeding habits and body structure make them an important subject of research in the fields of paleontology and evolutionary biology.
