Rotavirukseen

Rotavirukseen is the Finnish word for rotavirus. Rotavirus is a genus of double-stranded RNA viruses belonging to the family Reoviridae. It is the most common cause of severe diarrheal disease in infants and young children worldwide. Infection typically occurs through the fecal-oral route. The virus infects the cells of the small intestine, leading to inflammation and malabsorption of water and electrolytes.

Symptoms of rotavirus infection usually appear within two days of exposure and include vomiting, fever, and watery diarrhea. Dehydration is a significant complication of rotavirus gastroenteritis, especially in young children, and can be life-threatening if not managed properly. The illness typically resolves within a week. Diagnosis is usually made based on clinical symptoms, though laboratory tests can confirm the presence of rotavirus in stool samples.

Rotavirus vaccines are highly effective in preventing severe rotavirus disease. These vaccines are administered orally and are part of routine immunization schedules in many countries. While vaccination has significantly reduced the burden of rotavirus illness, it remains a prevalent cause of gastroenteritis in unvaccinated populations. Treatment for rotavirus infection is primarily supportive, focusing on rehydration to prevent or treat dehydration. Antiviral medications are not typically used for rotavirus infections.
