Roothaan

Roothaan is a Dutch surname. The most notable bearer is Jan Philipp Roothaan (1785–1853), a Jesuit priest who served as Superior General of the Society of Jesus after its restoration. Roothaan was elected general in 1829 and led the order until his death in 1853. His tenure occurred during a period of rebuilding after the suppression of the Jesuits in the 18th century and the revival of the Society beginning in 1814 by Pope Pius VII.

Roothaan oversaw organizational reforms aimed at revitalizing the order, emphasizing rigorous education, spiritual formation, and fidelity to the Society’s Constitutions. He supported the renewal of Jesuit education and the expansion of missions and ecclesiastical vocations, guiding the reestablishment of Jesuit houses and schools in Europe, the Americas, and beyond.
