Rokkorotat

Rokkorotat is a remote village located in the Rajang River delta of Sarawak, East Malaysia. The village is situated on the southern bank of the Rajang River, approximately 500 kilometers northwest of Kuching, the state capital. The language spoken by the inhabitants of Rokkorotat is a variant of Iban, one of the major ethnic groups in Sarawak.

Historically, the Rokkorotat community has relied on subsistence farming, fishing, and other traditional practices to meet their basic needs. The village's isolation and inaccessibility have hindered the development of modern infrastructure, and residents have maintained a relatively low profile in regional affairs. However, the village's strategic location on the Rajang River has made it a hub for primitive tribes' trade and communication in the past.

During the Brooke era, which spanned from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, Rokkorotat's leader, Tutang Ranggu, forged an alliance with the British colonial power, facilitating the introduction of modern accoutrements and governing structures. This period of British administration had a lasting impact on the socio-cultural and economic landscape of the village.

Today, the village continues to grapple with the challenges of urbanization, environmental degradation, and encroachment by the state. Despite these concerns, the Rokkorotat community remains largely intact, preserving its heritage and cultural practices amidst the imperatives of modern nation-building.
