Rohrblätter

Rohrblätter, also known as reeds, are essential components in many wind instruments, particularly woodwinds. They are typically made from a thin, flexible piece of material, traditionally a specific type of cane, though synthetic materials are also used. The primary function of a rohrblatt is to vibrate when air is blown across it, creating the sound produced by the instrument.

There are two main types of rohrblätter: single reeds and double reeds. Single reeds, like those found on clarinets and saxophones, consist of a single piece of cane that vibrates against a mouthpiece. Double reeds, used in instruments such as oboes, bassoons, and bagpipes, involve two pieces of cane that vibrate against each other. The precise cut, thickness, and strength of the rohrblatt significantly influence the instrument's tone, pitch, and responsiveness. Musicians often spend considerable time selecting, shaping, and adjusting their rohrblätter to achieve their desired sound. The quality and condition of the rohrblatt are paramount for producing good tone and playability.
