Ringestrasse
The Ringstrasse is a grand circular boulevard that encircles the Innere Stadt, or First District, of Vienna, Austria. Built in the mid-19th century, it replaced the former city walls of Vienna, which had been demolished. The Ringstrasse was conceived as a monumental project of urban renewal and architectural expression, intended to showcase the power and prosperity of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Construction began in 1857 under Emperor Franz Joseph I, and it was largely completed by the 1870s.
