Decomposition of dead organic matter by bacteria and fungi releases sulfur compounds back into the environment, thus continuing the cycle. Human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels and industrial processes, release significant amounts of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, altering the natural sulfur balance and contributing to environmental problems like acid rain and air pollution.
