Rieserferner

The Rieserferner is a glacier located in the Ötztal Alps of the Austrian state of Tyrol, specifically in the Stubai Alps sub-range. Situated at an elevation of approximately 3,100 meters above sea level, it is one of the largest glaciers in the Eastern Alps and has been a subject of scientific and environmental interest due to its rapid retreat in recent decades.

The glacier spans an area of roughly 11.5 square kilometers and is fed by snowfall from the surrounding peaks, including the Rieserfernerkopf (3,484 meters) and the nearby Hohe Munde (3,436 meters). Historically, the Rieserferner has played a significant role in the region’s hydrology, contributing meltwater to nearby rivers and streams. However, climate change has accelerated its retreat, with significant reductions in ice volume observed since the mid-20th century.
