Respires

Respires is a term that can refer to several related biological processes, primarily concerning the exchange of gases and energy within living organisms. At its most fundamental level, respiration describes the process by which organisms take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide, a process essential for cellular function in many life forms. This external exchange of gases is often called breathing or ventilation.

Internally, respiration also encompasses the complex metabolic pathways that break down nutrients, such as glucose, to release energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This cellular respiration occurs in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells and is vital for powering all cellular activities. In plants and some microorganisms, respiration can occur in the absence of oxygen, a process known as anaerobic respiration, which yields less energy but still sustains life. The term "respires" can therefore be used to describe an organism's ability to perform either aerobic or anaerobic respiration, or simply its act of breathing.
