Reseptorityypeistä (receptor types) refers to the classification of biological receptors based on their structure, function, and the signaling molecules they bind to. These receptors are crucial components of cellular communication, enabling cells to respond to external stimuli.

One major category is intracellular receptors, which are located within the cell, either in the cytoplasm or nucleus. These receptors typically bind to lipophilic signaling molecules, such as steroid hormones and thyroid hormones, which can easily cross the cell membrane. Upon binding, the receptor-ligand complex often translocates to the nucleus and directly influences gene transcription.

Another broad classification is cell surface receptors, which are embedded in the plasma membrane. These receptors bind to hydrophilic signaling molecules, like peptide hormones and neurotransmitters, that cannot readily cross the cell membrane. Cell surface receptors can be further divided into several subclasses.

Ion channel-linked receptors form a pore through the membrane that can open or close in response to ligand binding, altering the flow of ions across the membrane. G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are a large family of receptors that, upon activation by a ligand, interact with intracellular G proteins, initiating a signaling cascade. Enzyme-linked receptors possess enzymatic activity themselves or are associated with enzymes. Ligand binding activates the enzymatic domain, leading to signal transduction.

The specific type of receptor involved dictates the cellular response. Understanding these receptor types is fundamental to comprehending signal transduction pathways and developing drugs that target specific cellular processes.
