Reoxidising

Reoxidising is a term used in various scientific and industrial contexts to describe the process of restoring a substance to a higher oxidation state. This typically involves reacting the substance with an oxidizing agent. In chemistry, reoxidation can occur after a reduction step. For instance, in electrochemistry, an electrode material might be reduced and then subsequently reoxidized to regenerate its active state for further cycles. This is a common phenomenon in rechargeable batteries, where the electrodes undergo reversible oxidation and reduction reactions.

In metallurgy, reoxidising can refer to the removal of unwanted oxygen from molten metal. This is often achieved by introducing elements that have a stronger affinity for oxygen, which then form oxides that can be skimmed off. This process is crucial for producing high-purity metals. In biological systems, reoxidation plays a role in metabolic pathways, such as the regeneration of electron carriers. For example, NADH is oxidized back to NAD+ in the electron transport chain, allowing glycolysis to continue.
