Reititysprosessit refers to the processes involved in determining the best path for data to travel across a network. In essence, it is how network devices, such as routers, decide where to send information packets to reach their intended destination. This involves complex algorithms and protocols that enable devices to exchange information about the network topology and available routes.

The core of reititysprosessit lies in routing tables. These are data structures maintained by routers that list known network destinations and the next hop or interface to use to reach them. When a router receives a data packet, it examines the destination IP address and consults its routing table. If a match is found, the packet is forwarded along the determined path. If no direct match exists, the router may use a default route or forward the packet to another router that is closer to the destination.

Various routing protocols facilitate the maintenance and updating of these routing tables. Interior Gateway Protocols (IGPs) like OSPF and RIP are used within a single autonomous system (a collection of networks under a single administrative control). Exterior Gateway Protocols (EGPs) such as BGP are used to exchange routing information between different autonomous systems, forming the backbone of the global internet. These protocols constantly exchange updates, allowing routers to adapt to changes in network conditions, such as link failures or new network additions, ensuring data can find alternative paths if the primary route becomes unavailable.
