Referenciaelektródokkal are electrodes used in electrochemistry to provide a stable and reproducible potential against which the potential of other electrodes can be measured. They are essential components in electrochemical cells, enabling accurate and consistent measurements. The key characteristic of a reference electrode is its stable electrochemical potential, which does not change significantly under varying conditions of the solution or current flow. This stability is achieved through carefully controlled chemical reactions within the electrode.

Commonly used reference electrodes include the saturated calomel electrode (SCE) and the silver-silver chloride electrode (Ag/AgCl). The SCE consists of mercury in contact with mercurous chloride paste, immersed in a saturated potassium chloride solution. The Ag/AgCl electrode typically involves a silver wire coated with silver chloride, also immersed in a potassium chloride solution. The concentration of the electrolyte solution is crucial for maintaining the electrode's stable potential.

When used in an electrochemical experiment, the reference electrode is connected to a high-impedance voltmeter or potentiostat. The potential difference between the reference electrode and the working electrode (the electrode whose potential is being studied) is then measured. This allows researchers to control or monitor the potential of the working electrode precisely, which is vital for studying reaction kinetics, determining thermodynamic properties, and performing various electrochemical analyses. The choice of reference electrode often depends on the specific electrochemical system and experimental conditions, such as temperature, pH, and the presence of interfering ions.
