Redoxmechanismen, also known as redox reactions or oxidation-reduction reactions, are fundamental processes in chemistry and biology where the oxidation state of atoms or molecules changes. These reactions involve the transfer of electrons between substances, resulting in the simultaneous occurrence of oxidation and reduction.

The substance that undergoes oxidation is called the reducing agent, while the substance that undergoes reduction is called the oxidizing agent.

Redox reactions can be represented using oxidation numbers, which indicate the hypothetical charge an atom would have if all bonds were ionic. The sum of the oxidation numbers in a reaction must be zero, and the sum of the oxidation numbers in an atom must equal its charge.
