Receptorkapcsolódást, known in English as receptor binding, is a fundamental process in biology and pharmacology. It refers to the interaction between a molecule, typically a ligand, and a specific receptor protein. Receptors are usually located on the surface of a cell or within the cell, and they possess a unique three-dimensional structure that allows them to bind to specific signaling molecules. Ligands can be hormones, neurotransmitters, drugs, or other endogenous or exogenous substances.

The binding event is highly specific, akin to a lock and key mechanism, where the shape and chemical properties of the ligand must complement those of the receptor's binding site. This interaction triggers a conformational change in the receptor, which in turn initiates a cascade of events within the cell, leading to a specific cellular response. This response can vary widely, from altering gene expression to activating or inhibiting enzyme activity, or opening ion channels.

Understanding receptor binding is crucial for developing new drugs. Many therapeutic agents exert their effects by binding to specific receptors, either mimicking or blocking the action of natural ligands. For example, a drug might act as an agonist, activating the receptor to produce a desired effect, or as an antagonist, blocking the receptor to prevent an unwanted effect. The affinity and efficacy of a drug at its target receptor are key determinants of its therapeutic potential and side effect profile.
