Ravenscraig

Ravenscraig is a former steelworks located in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. Opened in 1919, it was one of the largest and most advanced steel plants in Britain. The works were operated by several companies throughout its history, including David Colville and Sons, and later, British Steel Corporation.

The Ravenscraig site played a significant role in the industrial landscape of Scotland, employing thousands of people over its operational life. Its closure in 1992 marked a major turning point for the local economy and represented a broader decline in heavy industry in the UK. The closure led to substantial job losses and had a profound social impact on the surrounding communities.

Following the steelworks' closure, a large-scale regeneration project was undertaken. The site has since been redeveloped for a variety of uses, including housing, commercial enterprises, and leisure facilities. A significant portion of the site is now home to the O2 Academy Glasgow music venue and the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility. The regeneration efforts aim to transform the former industrial heartland into a modern, sustainable community.
