Rauchschiebern

Rauchschiebern is a German term that translates to "smoke sliders" or "smoke dampers." In practical application, it refers to a device used in chimney systems to regulate the flow of smoke and combustion gases. These devices are typically installed within the chimney flue or at the top of the chimney stack. Their primary function is to control the draft, which is the upward movement of air and gases through the chimney.

By adjusting the position of the Rauchschieber, a user can partially or fully open or close the flue. A partially closed Rauchschieber can reduce excessive draft, preventing too much heat from escaping up the chimney and improving the efficiency of the heating appliance. Conversely, opening it fully ensures adequate ventilation when needed, for example, during the initial lighting of a fire.

Rauchschiebern can be operated manually or automatically. Manual versions usually involve a lever or handle that is accessible from the exterior of the chimney. Automatic Rauchschiebern often incorporate temperature sensors or other mechanisms to adjust the damper based on the conditions within the chimney or the heating system.
