Rakenneyhtälöt, or structural equations, represent a class of statistical models used to analyze complex relationships between observed and latent variables. These models are particularly powerful in fields like psychology, sociology, and education, where direct measurement of underlying constructs is often impossible. A structural equation model essentially combines aspects of factor analysis and multiple regression to test theoretical relationships.

The core idea is to posit a causal structure, or at least a hypothesized dependency, between variables. Observed variables are those directly measured, while latent variables are theoretical constructs that are inferred from the observed variables. The model specifies how latent variables are related to each other (the structural part) and how observed variables are related to the latent variables they are meant to represent (the measurement part).

Statistical software is used to estimate the parameters of these models and assess their fit to the data. Goodness-of-fit indices are then examined to determine how well the proposed model replicates the observed covariance matrix of the data. If the fit is acceptable, researchers can interpret the estimated path coefficients to understand the strength and direction of the hypothesized relationships, including direct and indirect effects.
