Radikaaliparit

Radikaaliparit, meaning "radical pairs" in Finnish, is a concept primarily discussed within the realm of chemistry, particularly in the study of reaction mechanisms. It refers to a pair of reactive species, typically radicals, that are formed simultaneously and remain in close proximity for a sufficient duration to influence each other's subsequent reactions. This close association, often within a solvent cage, allows for spin correlation to be maintained between the unpaired electrons of the radical pair.

The significance of radical pairs lies in their ability to undergo spin-selective reactions. If the spins of the two radicals are antiparallel (singlet state), they can readily recombine to form a stable molecule. If the spins are parallel (triplet state), recombination is spin-forbidden and less likely to occur, leading to cage escape and diffusion of the radicals into the bulk solvent where they can react independently. This spin selectivity is a fundamental aspect of radical pair chemistry and has implications in various chemical and biological processes.

Radical pair mechanisms are important in understanding the decomposition of peroxides, the photochemistry of various organic molecules, and even in biological systems like photosynthesis and the magnetic sense of birds. The study of radical pairs helps elucidate reaction pathways that might otherwise be difficult to explain through conventional ionic mechanisms.
