RTÉ2

RTÉ2 is an Irish free-to-air television channel operated by Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). Launched in 1978 as RTÉ 2, it served as RTÉ’s second terrestrial channel and the primary outlet for programming separate from RTÉ One. Through the 1990s and 2000s it was rebranded several times, eventually returning to the simpler RTÉ2 branding in the 2010s as part of RTÉ’s overall refresh.

RTÉ2’s remit is to complement RTÉ One with entertainment, drama, comedy, documentaries, and imported programming, with a particular focus on younger audiences. Its scheduling has included Irish-produced series, acquired international dramas and comedies, and a range of sports content in collaboration with RTÉ Sport.

The channel is available free-to-air in Ireland on the Saorview digital terrestrial platform, and is distributed via satellite and cable networks. It is funded by RTÉ’s public service remit and, like RTÉ One, carries advertising. RTÉ2 programming is produced and broadcast from RTÉ’s Donnybrook campus in Dublin, with online content also available on the RTÉ Player streaming service.

As part of RTÉ’s network, RTÉ2 functions alongside RTÉ One and RTÉjr to deliver a mix of public-service and entertainment programming to Irish audiences.
