The RTMP protocol operates over TCP and establishes a persistent connection between the client and the server. This connection allows for continuous data flow, which is crucial for real-time streaming applications. When a client initiates an RTMP connection, it establishes a handshake with the server to negotiate parameters and begin the data transfer.

RTMP feeds are typically generated by media servers that receive raw audio and video streams from encoders. These servers then package the data into RTMP chunks and send them to connected clients. Viewers use RTMP-compatible players, such as Flash Player (historically) or modern HTML5 players that support RTMP through libraries, to receive and decode the stream.

While RTMP was a dominant protocol for live streaming for many years, its usage has been gradually declining in favor of newer protocols like HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) and MPEG-DASH, which offer better compatibility with mobile devices and a wider range of network conditions. However, RTMP is still utilized in certain broadcasting scenarios, particularly for ingesting streams into media servers or for specific legacy applications.
