RPKIjärjestelmän, or Resource Public Key Infrastructure, is a framework designed to secure the internet's routing infrastructure. It aims to prevent misdirection of internet traffic, such as IP address hijacking, by providing a way for network operators to cryptographically validate that they are authorized to announce specific IP address resources. This system uses a hierarchy of digital certificates to create a trust chain, originating from regional internet registries (RIRs) and extending down to individual organizations.

The core components of RPKI are certificates, which are issued by RIRs to organizations that hold IP address space. These certificates are used to create cryptographically signed objects called "ROAs" (Route Origin Authorizations). A ROA specifies which IP address prefixes an organization is authorized to originate and which Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) are permitted to announce those prefixes.

Routers can then query the RPKI system to verify the validity of incoming BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) routing announcements. If a BGP announcement does not have a valid ROA associated with it, or if the ROA is invalid, the router can be configured to reject that announcement. This process helps ensure that traffic is routed to its intended destination and enhances the overall security and stability of the global internet. The implementation and adoption of RPKI are ongoing efforts within the networking community.
