RNApolymeraasilla is the Finnish word for RNA polymerase. RNA polymerase is a fundamental enzyme found in all living organisms and many viruses. It is responsible for the process of transcription, which is the synthesis of RNA from a DNA template. This process is crucial for gene expression, as RNA molecules serve as intermediaries in the transfer of genetic information from DNA to proteins.

There are different types of RNA polymerases, each specializing in transcribing specific types of RNA. In bacteria, a single RNA polymerase transcribes all types of RNA, including messenger RNA (mRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), and transfer RNA (tRNA). Eukaryotes, on the other hand, possess multiple RNA polymerases. RNA polymerase I transcribes most rRNA genes, RNA polymerase II transcribes protein-coding genes (producing mRNA) as well as genes for small nuclear RNAs and microRNAs, and RNA polymerase III transcribes tRNA genes, 5S rRNA genes, and other small RNA genes.

The mechanism of RNA polymerase involves unwinding the DNA double helix and using one strand as a template to assemble a complementary RNA molecule. This is achieved by catalyzing the formation of phosphodiester bonds between ribonucleotides, following the base-pairing rules (A with U, and G with C). The process is highly regulated, ensuring that genes are transcribed at the appropriate times and in the correct amounts, which is essential for cellular function and development. Mutations in RNA polymerase genes can lead to various genetic disorders and diseases.
