RNAgenomi

RNAgenomi is a term that refers to the genetic material of an organism or virus that is composed of ribonucleic acid (RNA). Unlike the more common deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), RNA is typically single-stranded and contains uracil instead of thymine. While DNA serves as the primary blueprint for most life forms, RNA plays a crucial role in gene expression, protein synthesis, and regulatory functions within cells.

In certain viruses, known as RNA viruses, the RNA genome is the sole carrier of genetic information. These viruses replicate their RNA directly or through an RNA intermediate. Examples of RNA viruses include influenza virus, poliovirus, and HIV. The RNA genome of these viruses can vary in structure, being either single-stranded or double-stranded, and positive-sense or negative-sense. Positive-sense RNA can be directly translated into proteins, while negative-sense RNA must first be transcribed into a complementary strand.

Beyond viruses, RNA molecules themselves can carry genetic information in various biological contexts. Small non-coding RNAs, for instance, can act as regulatory elements, influencing gene expression without being translated into proteins.
